As a result of the decision to bring the Uighur Gitmo detainees to Bermuda last week there has been a huge public backlash towards this decision. The vast majority of this backlash has been focused on the decision itself and how it was handled by the Premier.
Most people point out that the US is obligated under international law to have accommodated them in the US if they did not feel confident to repatriate them to the People's Republic of China - as such the decision to bring them here should have been a non-issue altogether. Others point out that the way it was done was unconstitutional, and the secrecy has led many people to feel betrayed by the decision.
Unfortunately a small, but possibly growing minority, have instead focused their anger at the Uighur detainees themselves. This anger has taken the form of reactionary prejudice, attacking both these peoples ethnicity and religion. Such behaviour and statements must be condemned as the prejudice they are.
Irrespective of ones personal opinion about the decision itself or the way it was handled, I ask that everyone who comes across individual's making such prejudiced statements corrects them on it.
Any suggestions on how best to get out there the message of countering this prejudice?

Very good points
I'm glad someone has raised this. No matter what you think of the decision made by Dr Brown to bring these men into Bermuda, it was not their decision and they cannot be judged because of it. We are a welcoming island famed for our hospitality (well we were anyway) and this should be no exception. These men have been through horrors that we would never wish on anyone, and the lease they can expect from us is respect and kindness.
Rumour has it they are looking to start a restaurant. I wish them all the best with their endeavours, and look forward to sampling some rather unique cuisine in the future!
Agreed
I really hope they open that restaurant!
Good Uighur Food
I'm getting hungry already thinking about it! They have this really nice dish - not sure of its real name - big plate chicken, which is darn good. Think a cross between Chinese spices and Indian Chicken Khorma! And they have these kind of lamb burgers too! Well, its more like a minced lamb and chilis in a pita, but whatever. And the lamb kebabs! Oh, and the langnam thick noodles! Mmmm-mm. Its actually really hard to find Uighur food outside of China. I think there are three restuarants in Australia, three in Germany, one in the UK and four in the USA, and maybe, just maybe, one in Canada. And that's like it.
New beginnings...
Trust you Jon to know a bunch of Uighur dishes. Mind you I like the idea of a Chinese/Indian dish.
Since there is still a lot of xenophobia in Beermuda still it is important that we all do our part to educate the greater community an if you see them reach out to them. In all that has transpired from their arrival I'm sure they're getting mixted messages. If they do open a restaurant I hope it is a success, Bermudians love food and it will give the greater community more exposure to them and hopefully make their transition that much smoother.
Not trying to start a fuss but the money from the US mustve been good if the gentlemen are goign to start a restaurant. Maybe it will be in EEZ?
